For the last couple weeks Nancy has been having Braxton-Hicks contractions which are typically painless and occur randomly. In the last week they had become more frequent often caused by any movement(getting out of bed, walking around gym, etc...). Still mostly painless, but enough tightening in her stomach to cause her to take note and wonder if this was normal.
So with several calls back and forth to the OB, the last few days they decided to send her to the hospital yesterday afternoon around 4pm to be monitored and check the frequency of the contractions. They hooked her up and quickly found the contractions were occuring a little more frequently than desired. So they gave her some medicine to help relax the uterus/placenta and also performed a test to see if she was likely to have pre-term labor. Between two different drugs, one pill and one shot, the contractions seemed to decrease, but they were still occuring. Also the test came back positive, so that meant staying overnight at the hospital to be monitored and the OB would come by in the morning and make a determination of the next steps.
I stayed overnight in the room with Nancy. Not exactly luxury accomodations for either of us, but we slept some regardless. :-)
Our OB came by around 9am and checked things out for herself and asked lots of questions about how Nancy was feeling and made the determination to send us home and remain on bed rest for 1 week and see her again next week and see if bed rest is still necessary and how to proceed.
They gave her a shot of steroids to help the baby's lungs, etc... develop in the event of a pre-term birth. Then also gave prescriptions for the same two drugs they provided to help relax the uterus.
So with all that said, I think we are being very cautious to make sure the pregnancy lasts as long as possible and to eliminate any risk of that not happening.
In our mind at this point we feel that by taking these precautions we will be able to make it to full-term, but you can never be 100% sure and we'll just go with the flow.
In talking with our OB, there isn't something we could have done differently to prevent this, it's just one of those things that can happen as every checkup thus far has been great and Nancy has been taking care of herself and not overdoing anything.
That's the scoop for now. No need for any panic, just filling everyone in.

Steve and Nancy -- Thanks for the update. Glad to hear the baby is hanging in there. Probably just impatient...ready to start the race! Also enjoyed the pics from the Redman tri. I was just at that same restaurant on that lake in OKC back in October. Nice spot to relax after a race. I'm planning to do the OKC Memorial Half Marathon next April 26. PLanning to tackle another 70.3 (or two) next summer.
Take care,
Daren
